Attacking midfielder Brett Holman prefers not to burden the team with too expectations though, and has said that the Socceroos just want to prove that they belong at the World Cup.

SuperSport United goalkeeper Emille Baron believes that his dream of a World Cup appearance is still on after being told by his doctor that his shoulder injury is not serious and will not take long to heal.

"I went to see the specialist on Friday and the good news is that I will only be out of action for four to five weeks.

South African Budget Airline Kulula Hit Back At FIFA With Second Advert

In response to having their ‘Unofficial carrier of the “you-know-what”’ advert blocked by FIFA, South African budget airline Kulula.com have come back with something even funnier.

In yesterday’s Sunday Times, Kulula flighted a full page advert that reads: ‘Not next year, not last year, but somewhere in between’, refering to 2010 in a way that would seem to mock FIFA's approach to any marketing which associates a company with the World Cup or South Africa.

Kulula’s previous advert was blocked for a number of reasons, two of which were their use of the South African flag and the vuvuzela.

This ad is illustrated with golf tees, which look very similar to a certain plastic trumpet but are labelled: ‘Definitely, definitely a golf tee’.

The page is bordered by two hanging pieces of cloth, which are labelled: ‘Colourful beach towel? Flag?’

Towards the bottom are a pair of what appear to be football boots, but have no studs, next to which is written, ‘No, they’re running shoes.’

Dominating the middle of the page is a structure that, at first glance, looks like a football stadium. But Kulula were told that they cannot use the Cape Town Stadium in their last advert. This is, in fact, ‘Storms River suspension bridge’.

Buying 2010 World Cup tickets to be made easy

The 2010 Fifa World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed this week that moves are afoot to change the way tickets are sold in South Africa in order to accommodate local fans.

Speaking to BuaNews, LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan said they had raised the matter with Fifa and that it would be discussed at the next executive meeting to be held in Zurich.

At the moment, tickets can be bought by filling in application forms at First National Bank (FNB) branches or fans can apply for tickets online.

The process has sparked an outcry from football fans who complained that it was just too complicated to secure tickets for Africa's first world cup tournament.

Unfamiliar technology

Some soccer analysts have also pointed out that ordinary soccer supporters in South African may not be familiar with the internet and any other technology used to apply for the world cup tickets.

"We are definitely in the process of changing this and as a member of the ticketing committee, I am confident that Fifa will understand our position," Jordaan said, adding that fans can expect to buy their tickets over the counter from April.

Jordaan cautioned though, that people should not wait for that time and should in the meantime use the current process to purchase their tickets: "If you wait for that time, there is danger that there will be few or no tickets at all," he said.

Around 50% of the three million tickets made available by Fifa have been sold.

The move comes with only a week before the closing of the third ticket sales phase for the general public on 22 January.

New sales phase

Meanwhile, Fifa also announced the creation of a new sales phase between 9 February and 7 April, to ensure that fans from the qualified associations have more time and easier access to tickets to watch their teams.

The arrangement will only cater for supporters of the participating member associations and add to previously taken measures directed at South African residents.

"Only one such phase had previously been planned, starting on 5 December 2009 and closing on 13 January 2010. This sales phase will run at the same time as the fourth sales phase for the general public carried out via Fifa.com and the FNB branches (in South Africa only) and will operate on a first-come-first-served basis," said Fifa.From:www.southafrica.info

All 20,000 tickets for the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival on January 23 featuring Santos and Ajax Cape Town have been sold out.

The local PSL derby, which marks the official opening of the R4.5 billion Cape Town Stadium, promises to be a day filled with football and festivities.

The event is being hosted by the City of Cape Town and sponsored by Virgin Active Health clubs and MTN.

“MTN has long been a supporter of South African soccer and we are delighted to be part of this fantastic event to open the magnificent new Cape Town Stadium," said Dudley Zikhali, MTN Football Sponsorship Manager, according to Kickoff.com.

“The facility is spectacular and we are certain that those fans who come out to support their teams will have an excellent day's entertainment,” Zikhali added.

“We have a keen rivalry, but one that is built on mutual respect,” Santos chairman Goolam Allie said.

“There have been some fantastic matches down the years which have been a credit to Cape football and we aim to put on a good show at the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival as well.”

These sentiments are echoed by Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitis. “We are delighted to be part of such a prestigious and historic occasion for Cape Town and it is fitting that we should be taking on our great rivals at the opening of this wonderful stadium,” Comitis said.

“We always enjoy playing Santos and are looking forward to another keenly-contested friendly match.”

Pulis has been in talks to sign the £40,000-a-week goalkeeper on loan for the rest of the season from cash-strapped Portsmouth.

The potential transfer is being discussed by the clubs' chief executives Tony Scholes and Peter Storrie, with a deal possibly expected in time for Stoke's Premier League clash with Liverpool this weekend.

And the Stoke manager believes that James's World Cup ambitions would make him ferociously competitive.

"He'll want to be on that plane to South Africa, and that attracts me to him more than anything else," said Pulis.

"He is desperate to play for England in the World Cup. So if we can bring him in and give him the opportunity to prove he is the best goalkeeper in England, and he proves that, then we'll be delighted."

Pulis added that James will face competition for the number one spot at the Pottters, but has refused to rule out the chance of unsettled Thomas Sorensen leaving, with the Dane having been with linked a move to Bayern Munich.

"If we can get him we'll be absolutely delighted because if there's a weakness (in the squad) it's been between the sticks in respect of having competition and back-up," he said.

Pim Verbeek's Socceroos found qualification all too easy in the Asian section, surrendering just one goal and missing out on four points in the eight game final round, but they've been handed a far tougher task in South Africa. According to the rankings there isn't much difference between Australia, Serbia or Ghana yet you have to feel, due to a lack of genuine competitive matches, they are the outsiders to make the last 16.

Their big positive is an abundance of Premier League talent with Tim Cahill, Brett Emerton and Lucas Neill all providing vital experience. Scott McDonald has shown enough at Celtic to suggest he can score at the top level yet it hasn't happened for his country - it's essential for Australia that it clicks or it's hard to see where the goals will come from.

AC Milan playmaker Ronaldinho is determined to win a place on Brazil’s World Cup squad next summer.

The 29-year-old was once a regular for the Brazilian national team for many years – helping the South American giants win the 2002 World Cup and 2005 Confederations Cup before finding himself out of the team because he failed to show consistent form in the past two seasons.

Ronaldinho suffered a dip in form at Barcelona and then at AC Milan last term.

But recently the former two-time FIFA world player of the year has been showing signs of his old self and is eager to earn a spot on Carlos Dunga’s roster for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

“The year which is about to end has been a positive one for myself and for Milan, but 2010 will be even better,” Ronaldinho told sports daily Il Corriere Dello Sport.

EA Sports has not yet announced a date for its 2010 FIFA World Cup version, but both Amazon and Gamefly have it listed for April 27. World Cup 2010 begins June 11 in South Africa.

EA has produced a dedicated version in every World Cup year going back to 1998; Pasta Padre notes the most recent was released in late April as well. And April 27 is indeed a Tuesday. Sounds like a good bet to me.

Former heroes’ World Cup 2010 hopes

All five of the players who were nominated for the title of 2009 Fifa World Footballer of the Year – Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Kaka and eventual winner Leo Messi – will most likely be battling it out in South Africa next year.

Indeed, unless injuries play a part, most of the 23 names on the original list of candidates will be in action at the 2010 Fifa World Cup 2010. The world’s greatest footballing event looks certain to be graced by the world’s greatest footballers – as well it should be.

Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Luis Fabiano, Wayne Rooney, Michael Ballack and Michael Essien are just some of the poster boys who will be representing their nations.

Some of football’s biggest names will not be making the trip to South Africa, however. Star forwards Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andrei Arshavin will be missing out since Sweden and Russia failed to qualify.

For other household names however, the old adage that you are “only as good as your last game” may well see them staying at home if they fail to make the cut when the squads are picked.

“I’m carrying around a lot of anger and real disappointment. I want to help Bayern [Munich] and stake a claim for the World Cup,” said Luca Toni a couple of weeks ago.

Three-and-a-half years ago, the striker played six of the seven matches in Germany for eventual winners Italy, scoring two goals, but the 32-year-old may well be forced to follow next year's tournament on TV.

He is no longer first-choice at Bayern, having fallen out of favour with coach Louis van Gaal, and the fan favourite will have to hope for a transfer to another club if he is to score the goals that will get him back in Marcello Lippi's reckoning.

The same applies to another storied forward line from the last Fifa World Cup – Argentina’s Javier Saviola and Hernan Crespo.
